Glossary or guide to terms used to describe lingerie and underwear

CORSETS
Usually long, sometimes, boned female item of lingerie – has been around in some form for thousands of years. See JK Lingerie Basques, Bustiers and Corsets>>>

BUSTIERS
Similar to a corset - often underwired, a more modern lingerie term often with more sexual overtones. See JK Lingerie Basques, Bustiers and Corsets>>>

BASQUES

BABY DOLLS
A seductive form of short nightdress, usually with an empire cut waistband and A-Line cut, normally no lower than mid-thigh – much beloved of the British Carry On films!

BALCONET BRAS
Bras that are designed to give a lift to the breasts, whilst revealing as much as possible. Much used in period films such as 'Pride and Predjudice' where heaving bosoms were very much in evidence, particularly on the arrival of Mr D'Arcy...

BIKINIS
Much like a bra set, although usually slightly less revealing, designed to be worn on the beach and sometimes even for swimmimg! See JK Lingerie swim and beachwear >>>

BOXERS
Usually worn as underwear by men although women also wear boxer shorts as underwear. Usually loose fitting although they can aslo be tight fitting, made of stretchy material. See JK Lingerie mens underwear>>>

BRAS
Also "brassiere" – French derivation. An item of womens lingerie, worn under clothes to support the breasts. See JK Lingerie bras>>>

CAMI or CAMISOLE
Cami or camisoles are items of female lingerie that cover from bust to waist, usually sleeveless and they offer little or no support for the breasts. Nowadays camis or cami-tops are sometimes lingerie that is worn as outerwear instead of underwear. See JK Lingerie camisoles>>>

ELASTANE
Popular lingerie fabric that's very stretchy to give a figure hugging look – made from segmented polyurethane.

FRENCH KNICKERS
Loose fitting panties, often made of silk, satin or lace with elastic waist.

FULL BRIEFS
Panties that fit up to the waist and has a full bottom coverage. Not so popular these days.

FULL CUP BRAS

Bras that, as the term suggests fully encloses the breasts. See JK Lingerie bras>>>

GOWNS or NIGHT GOWNS
Long dress type garments, usually of light fabric worn by women to sleep in. See JK Lingerie Night Wear>>>

G-STRINGS
Very brief style of panties or briefs that have thin string sides and just a fine string that runs up between the buttocks. Also worn by men, sometimes abbreviated to "string". See JK Lingerie thongs and strings>>>

LYCRA
Originally a trademark of DuPont – elastomeric fibre with stretch and recover abilities – often used in sportwear as well as lingerie.
